1896Samuel Bothwell and Isaiah McCullagh, who had separately emigrated to South Africa from Northern Ireland, open the original McCullagh & Bothwell on central Jones Street, Kimberley – a high end menswear store aimed at the new found diamond wealth in the town.
Passage to Bulawayo
1897Sam Bothwell is a passenger on the first stream train into Bulawayo and within weeks opens up a store there.
First store in Salisbury
1902Samual Bothwell opens his first store in Salisbury, and his brother-in-law, Isaiah Walker joins the business in Kimberley

Hyde Park Store
1969A new shopping Centre is built North of Johannesburg. McCullagh & Bothwell is one of the original tenants for a shop in the same position we find ourselves today – McCullagh & Bothwell – Hyde Park Pty (Ltd) is incorporated.
Refurbishing of the Hyde Park Store
1990The firm refurbishes their iconic flagship Hyde Park Corner store.
OUR HERITAGE
McCullagh & Bothwell was established in 1896 by Messrs McCullagh and Bothwell in Kimberley. It has remained a family business, with descendants of Sam Bothwell owning and running the company to this day.
McCullagh & Bothwell opened its first store in Johannesburg in 1906. We currently have three stores in Johannesburg, located in Hyde Park, Observatory, and Fourways.
The name McCullagh & Bothwell has for many years been synonymous with the supply of school uniforms. We are extremly proud to be associated with many of Johannesburg’s, and indeed the country’s, best known schools and in many cases this association is a long standing one.
